Sharafat A. Chaudhry is a development professional turned Lawyer with academic background in disciplines of Law, Social Sciences and Humanities. He is the founding partner of the law firm Hassan & Sharafat (HS Advocates) and associated with renowned law firms Jurisconsults and a Cyprus based Yiannis Papazacharia L.L.C.
He has drafted and contributed for more than twenty Human Rights related laws. The success rate of the drafting is indicated in the way that some of his drafted bills are now Acts of Parliament, particularly related to the Rights of the Child, including ICT Child Protection Bill, 2017, Juvenile Justice System Bill, 2017, Hindu Marriage Act, 2017, Criminal Law (Second Amendment) Act, 2016, Balochistan Child Protection Act, 2016, GB Child Protection and Welfare Act, 2016, ICT Prohibition of Child Labour at Brick Kilns Bill, 2016.
He has represented public and private clients, in more than 350 case, in different courts of law in matters related to inter alia Child protection, Juveniles, Custody of minors, Violence against Children and Women, Anti-terrorism, Civil, Corporate Crimes and Constitution. Moreover, he has conducted public interest litigation and pleaded before the courts of law to protect Women & Children in particular, and Human Rights in general in Pakistan.
During last four years, he assisted Ministry of Law & Justice and Ministry of Human Rights on human rights and development issues and wrote a number of pieces of legislative advice, legal opinion and replied to the legal questions.
He has a contribution to Pakistan’s UNCRC Fifth Periodic Report and wrote Replies to the Additional Questions on Pakistan’s UNCRC Fifth Periodic Report; Wrote Initial Report on UNCRC OPSC (2nd Optional Protocol). Further, he conducted research studies on legal, social, security and governance topics and contributed in internationally circulated research journals and reports.
He has an extensive experience in consultations and trainings. He has facilitated and conducted a number of national and provincial consultations with stakeholders to draft, review and finalize different Bills. Furthermore, he conducted more than 35 trainings on Child Rights and gender sensitive prosecution related matters. Among these trainings, he has also trained and facilitated the members of Balochistan Assembly and GB Legislative Assembly on the Rights of the Child.
He has a vast experience in development sector as he worked as a Camp Manager in Qatar Red Crescent, as a Program officer in Islamic Relief Pakistan, as District Coordinator & Regional Pedagogy Expert in Society for Advancement of Education. He has also worked as consultant in different projects with Punjab Education Sector Reforms Program, Reach out to Asia Qatar, Directorate of Staff Development Punjab, SAHE, CIDAW and World Bank.
As a visiting faculty, he teaches Business Law, International Law and Human Rights Law at Iqra University. Previously, he has taught at ICT Police Academy and International Islamic University, Islamabad.
